Regardless of whether the business is housed in an office building or shopping center, or whether it occupies a single structure bordered by other buildings or surrounded by open areas (parking lot, lawn, etc.), the first line of defense against intrusion is the extreme outward perimeter.

It is during that period of time when the business is open to the public that more hazardous risk factors are present. Retail establishments are subject to shoplifting activity, and other businesses, too, are open to theft by persons entering the property under one guise or another. Theft by employees is another problem. Armed robbery is a potential, along with espionage by a competitive company, sabotage, many times by unhappy or dissident employees, fraud, embezzlement, along with numerous non-crime related hazards such as fires, accidents, and injuries, all of which could be extremely costly to the small businessperson. There are three basic precautions to guard against all incidents such as those just mentioned: 1. Know who is on your property, employees, visitors, and customers alike. 2. Know when they are on the property. 3. Know why they are there.

Points To Remember During A Robbery
|
"Robbery" may be loosely defined as the taking of property by force or the the threat of violence. There are several points a proprietor or individual must remember in order to survive a holdup safely without endangering his/her life or the lives or welfare of others. 1. Remain calm. Do not make quick moves and keep your hands in sight at all times. 2. Speak in calm, even tones and, if possible, attempt to be on the pleasant and courteous side. Do not speak harshly, sarcastically, or in a condescending tone of voice. 3. Attempt to display both through your tone of voice and the words used that there will be complete cooperation. 4. Do not lie. 5. Remember, the holdup man/woman is probably at least as nervous as you are. 6. Without making it obvious, be aware of obtaining the best possible description of the holdup man/woman. Finally, after the suspect leaves the premises, note which which direction he/she travels and listen for the sound of a vehicle. Unless there is adequate cover, do rush to the front of or outside the store/house to watch him leave, as he/she may fire if he/she is armed.

Security Outside Your Home
|
1. Trim shrubs so windows and doors are in full view from the street. Unobstructed doors and windows are a deterrent because the intruder is forced to work in the open where detection is likely. 2. Maintain adequate lighting at entry points. 3. Don't leave ladders and tools lying around outside where burglars can use them to enter your home 4. Always keep your garage doors closed and locked. 5. All valuables like lawn mowers and bicycles should be locked in your garage.
